It's a very common trap to fall into though. I've seen more than a few "Wow, this hardline politician is really nice in person have we been misjudging them?" article over the years.
My sense of those is that they tend to be paid for or at least solicited by that hardline politician. They try to find someone to in the press to make that pitch to, and sometimes that pitch works, on the reporter and those who read the article, sadly.
At the end of the day….these people are politicians. The best liars that we have to offer. MAGAts wanted someone different and settled on a narcissistic, megalomaniacal, con man and are too dumb to realize that is even worse. His greatest skill is lying to people and winning elections.
