“By their deeds, you will know them.”
“By their deeds, you will know them.”
Tell you what, I'm reading Matthew 7 now, from which that line is taken, and it's a banger, and proof that not a single crusader out there ever read the bible :p I'm surprised Trump doesn't burn when he touches it. Whole chapter is about watching out for shitheads and being cool or getting karma'd
There are a lot of great lessons in the Bible on how to be a decent, contributing member of society. It proves to me that people have always been people and there are those that call out shit behavior (and celebrate the good). Pharisees and con men will always prey on ignorance and fear.
A lot of Jesus' teachings come directly from the Pharisees but Christianity does not like to acknowledge that
The Pharisees preached doctrine. What really ruined their reputation is the flagrant hypocrisy. Very “rules for thee but not for me” which we see a lot of today.
You shouldn't rely on Xtian scripture for information about Jewish sects. The Pharisees were focused on bringing Jewish religious practices out of the Temple & into everyday life. They are the creators/ancestors of rabbinic Judaism. They left behind extensive records of their teachings.
I acknowledge your concern. This is a he said/she said account of history and there is definitely anti-Jewish sentiment then and now that can come from this. I don’t assume these Pharisees speak for all Jews anymore than a Pastor speaks for every Presbyterian. The lesson is the message ➡️🚫 hyprocites
Here's the thing tho, we're not objecting to this from the point of theology, but from "history of antisemitism". You're not creating the analogy from scratch. You're reusing language that has been used for centuries and has been accumulating antisemitic baggage for all that time. 1/
"Pharisee" means "bad like Jews" because that is the meaning intentionally given by xtians along the way. You can't just say "well today in 2025 I just want to make this analogy but just please ignore the way other people have made/used this same analogy with same exact wording" 2/
It's like wanting to use a dog-whistle but "I swear this time I really just mean coastal-elite-cultural-marxist". Because even if that was your goal, you're still helping those who want to use Pharisee to mean "bad like Jews" but also want to avoid consequences. 3/
You're giving cover to antisemites who _do_ want to say "don't be bad like Jews" but have the option to go "no no, you see I didn't mean Jews I meant those guys in the story only" when receiving push back. 4/
What, specifically, did “the Pharisees” do that was hypocritical?
It’s ok to admit when you don’t know something instead of just making stuff up.
Ok. I don’t know what really happened. I wasn’t there. I only have records by those who were who may or may not have an agenda. I think we’re getting off subject in a need to be right online. Do you think it is wrong that people in power should follow their own rules?
The issue is that Christian history and scripture are chock full of examples of hypocrisy that don't involve punching down on a tiny religious minority that Christians have been chasing around the globe and murdering wherever they find them for centuries upon centuries.
The records don’t say what you’re saying. You’re just making shit up.
The Gospels are not contemporary accounts. The oldest of them, Mark, was written about 30-40 years after Jesus's death.
No. What really ruined their reputation is xtians writing stories about them (and jews in general) filled with lies and misconceptions; and then spending the next 2000ish years insisting on those lies as truth and evidence of jews' malfeasance and evil doing. Y'all did that, don't go victim-blaming.
It's really disappointing to see y'all join a thread about "here's to doing good deeds", to go all "yeah don't be like those stinky Jews eewww". Sigh.
Every cool thing Jesus ever said was him cribbing a Pharisee who said it better. Make today the day you stop repeating a antisemitic slanders.
