We should tax all churches that are political, which is the law, but i wonder if that would shut them down. They would probably just lie about their earnings.

Just tax all non-profit organizations, church or not. So many non-profits engage in partisan activity under a veil of nonpartisanship. Or, operate in such a way as to produce very little of charitable or otherwise publicly beneficial product. Tax them and be done with it.

This is not to say that many non-profits do not do great and essential work. But their ability to do faux-partisan "advocacy" - or failure in some cases to produce appreciable social benefit - may require some reassessment as to how they are treated under the tax code. My thoughts in shorthand.

I rather agree with you, but have reservations. I live by a local non profit that truly gives away all their profits and pay all employees a living wage. Not an excessive wage. If they had to pay taxes, it would decrease those that they help.

They take up inordinate amounts of valuable land, and pay nothing for the infrastructure it takes to serve them. Very few of them do any meaningful charity work - what they call charity work is just aimed at boosting enrollment.
