I don't even understand that one paragraph! Are the funds claimed or unclaimed?

That’s confusing wording; they are sitting unclaimed until a person claims them. If you prove it’s your money, they write you a warrant for the amount, which is a peculiar name for a check drawn on the state’s account. (it’s not a check legally but works like a check for all intents and purposes)
You seem to know what you're talking about. Can you think of any reason not to file a claim? That word warrant is still freaking me out.
It’s cool. I made an unclaimed property claim several years ago. In Iowa they market it as the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt. I received a warrant in the mail, and mobile deposited it like any check. When the county paid me for working the polls, that was also called a warrant.
OK. I'll do it. If jackbooted thugs come to my door and drag me away for some unspecified violation, I'm gonna blame you.
Also, if it's more than like 50 bucks, I will give you half for the charity of your choice.
I hope it’s a nice chunk of change. My choice, in light of the defunding of public broadcasting, is public radio station KSTK in Wrangell, AK. www.kstk.org/2025/07/22/k...
Good choice. I will keep you updated.
Late to the conversation but I’ve done this multiple times in both my current state (ME) and former (MA). It’s worth the effort to check the state unclaimed property site and not just once either. I found a check that was my dad’s a full 24 years after his death—claiming it was a bit of a chore.
