Dour like hour sounds like what it describes. But I have heard fewer read to me more than the alternative. And it does not sell the dourness at all

I have never heard it any other way than rhyming with hour, though there could be dialects that say it another way

The pronunciation was dewer (still is in certain precincts), but usage has changed it to like hour. IOW, it was changed by way of widespread mispronunciation. Also, stanch is for blood. Staunch is for holding firm.

My wife and I, after listening to an online dictionary pronunciation and sharing confused looks, have agreed that we do not, and will never, accept "dewer". THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER.
