SSNs were never intended to be a security tool, but got shoehorned into it. Fraudsters who get ahold of the data can cause serious damage, but most identity verification these days uses multiple factors and no so much SSNs. Time to freeze your credit w credit bureaus if you haven't done it already.

SSNs being a tool at all kind of brought about the myth of “identity theft.” Not that I will broadcast my SSN, but in the end, if somebody else took out credit in my name using the SSN, why does that involve me? That was a thing done between two entities I had no relationship or contract with.
