I fail to see how making wealthy parents pay for their kids' lunches is a crisis.

The amount of admin time and paperwork to “qualify” is outrageous - ask me how I know. “Wealthy” kids usually eat before school and bring their own lunch and have dinner. Plus you miss a huge # of qualifying kids for many reasons. MN has free school food for all. Very proud of that a willing to pay

How about having wealthy parents refuse the tax breaks and we use the money to pay for school lunches. Sounds like a fair trade off.

Well, the result of the change is that: (1) poor families can still get free lunches; (2) wealthy families can't.

It’s also important not to stigmatize kids. If only poor people get lunches, then it becomes public information.

That’s a step towards no one getting them and you know it. Means testing things only makes it more difficult for everyone.

Wealthy parents send their kids to private schools. This was a free lunch program for public school kids, where the vast majority of kids do not come from wealthy families.

In NC, all the wealthy parents put their kids in private schools using the private school voucher $ that the Rep legislature just expanded to include families of any income.
