As a former human rights lawyer (the kind who bailed protesters out of police stations under tear gas and fought against injunctions, let me be clear, Keir Starmer is not a human rights lawyer, and he has never done the kind of work we do.

We need more of you right now
I'm share this. It's to protect Trans People and immigrants from hateful attacks from far Right bigots. For it's up to us to help them in every way we can. Do so while staying safe.
No wonder he's showing his human-rights chops on #Gaza

The only real highlight of his very long career is the McLibel case and that only happened because of the Human Rights Act and the quirks of the notorious English libel law at the time. Honestly, almost any libel case around 1999 could have become the first big test.
He seems to have spent much of his legal career coasting on the "Human Rights Lawyer" title & that case, while doing nothing much to otherwise warrant it. And now he's trying to do the same as PM.
Starmer made his whole parliamentary maiden speech about the Human Rights Act. (No mention of LGBT rights as Labour lost all those cases plus yah know...?) hansard.parliament.uk/Commons/2015...
Early warning signs, there.
I mean, this is a guy who seems to seriously believe "my father was a toolmaker" is all the working class credentials he needs, never mind that, apparently, his father actually owned the factory. Minimal effort at all times.
All my friends (including one who joined Matrix Chambers this year, good on him) who went into crime and human rights work spent nights taking emergency calls. But not Keir Starmer. Sure he is from a different generation. But he stuck to high-end Commonwealth Caribbean death penalty cases.
The more I read about his so-called human rights law career, the clearer it became that he only does things that let him fail upwards. Heβs no different from the rest of his cabinet. They all fail upwards.
