That's the consequence for KNOWINGLY lying to the public. Freedom of speech doesn't equal the freedom to lie without any repercussions.

Only in limited cases, such as defamation. Generally, 1A does protect lies.

Defamation is more than just a lie and most lies are protected by the First Amendment. See US v Alvarez.
