Back I NYC in the 1970s and 1980s, parents would send their kids out to school on their own. No school buses or adults. We all just walked — or took the subway — to school. 🏫 I recall walking past burned out or dilapidated homes we’d call “crack houses”; they probably were. 🏚️ And we all lived! 👦👧

Growing up in Brooklyn during the 70s/80s, every single one of the things on the public playground were made of metal.. and they didn’t do a great job of rounding the corners. I bruised my shins and other things plenty of times on the slide ladder, the swings, the seesaw…😂

I got road rash on my thighs all the way up to my bum from skateboarding in shorts w/my sister. Went down a hill sitting on our boards with our legs on each others boards & held each others legs. My board kicked out, she didn’t let go. Had gravel scrubbed out at the ER & grounded for the ER visit.

Hell we played tackle football with the old K2 footballs on a concrete field because the apartment complex in the city had no grass. Most of the times we’d do that on the basketball courts and if not there then the parking lot. Broken arms were a thing of my childhood and bike ramps from hell.

In the Seventies we were trying shit like that on our Spyder bikes. 😂 At least BMX bikes were hypothetically built for it! Jumps, off road downhill races, the angled walls of the drainage culvert, towing each other on those clip on street skates .... 😬 How are we all alive indeed.

There's another story for that one! The original mountain bikes were old Schwinn paperboy bikes. Group of friends used to race them down a mountain in CA .... forget where, San Berdoo maybe? Anyway they started beefing them up, inventing mods, and a whole industry was born.

We used to try and swim the entire length of the T-Dock underwater. If we didn’t make it, you could only come up for air between beams & in a space of about 6”. I recently told my auntie this & she said she & my mom used to dive in after the ferries just to swim in the wake!!!! WTH!!
