People are incorrigibly dumb, and I don't think phone distraction can be socially or regulatorily stamped out. It is a strong argument for autonomous vehicles.

I mean, if you want to use machines, easier (trivial, pretty much) to make ones that check the driver’s paying attention than ones which drive the car themselves.
