Important detail: - every pupil in a family on Universal Credit will get free school meals, scrapping rule that parents must earn under £7,400 - This will lift 100,000 children out of poverty

I don’t see how extra meals will lift children out of poverty. Out of hunger, maybe. At least during term time, but this isn’t going to solve poverty.

Hard to fathom that many government policies could have a better ROI than making sure children are well-fed. Life-changing stuff. Well done.

In Wales the WG took £35m out of the education budget to pay for this. This was passed on to local authorities and schools who then cut learning support and some teachers, to pay for the ‘free’ school meals and parents are still sending sandwiches because the kids won’t eat the food.

We could raise this even higher by scrapping MP benefits.

Do you have any figures to show how one free meal will lift 100,000 children out of poverty. Surely the poorest were already getting them (with presumably, many still living in poverty despite this), what are those numbers based on, just those newly eligible...? Has BP said where they're from?

What happens during summer holidays and does this not come into force until September next year?

As poverty is based on income, no it won’t.

Giving a kid a meal a day doesn't lift them out of poverty. What the fuck are you talking about?
