“Hey, look out over the water - that’s an interesting looking b—“ 😲 #birds #mammals 🌿

A brown bat flies by with cattails in the background. Its wings are translucent, backlit by the sun.

I think it’s a Big Brown Bat and I do see them foraging in daylight sometimes. I understand they enjoy mosquitos and we currently have a *bumper crop* of those

😍 Great shot, and a surprising one. Could hardly believe that I caught a short video of one in flight.)

I hope to get back to Australia sometime. There's at least one bat-care facility that takes volunteers. ... Here are a couple of photos from the garden, if I may offer pix in return:

Three grey-headed flying foxes — fruit bats — hang upside-down by one foot from bare tree branches. They're wrapped up snugly in their black wings, with small patches of reddish fur showing. They look rather like slightly bulgy oval Christmas tree ornaments. There are some green leaves on branches below the bats; the sky above is blue, with some shapeless, hazy white clouds. At the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney in Australia, September 2008. The same shot of the same three bats, but the topmost bat has started to open its wings, which are bent outward at its sides, with the thumbs visible. More of its red back and ruff are also visible, and its black ears.
