Okay I caved and did one of these! With the caveat that I tried to pick ten movies I don't think other people picked, and which I haven't seen anyone else pick, other than O Brother. I'm being a spoiler! I'm being Ralph Nader! But I stand by them all!

My favorite thing about these lists is everyone includes a great but largely forgotten sci fi favorite or two. I loved District 9!

its a beautiful comedy drama built around a sparkling performance from one of our great actors and also an eldritch text that precisely predicts where the sublimated rage of our social order is going to bleed out, you simply cannot deny it
The driving school instructor was actually very slightly ahead of its time. Amazing
District 9 is a solid choice. Hard to believe the same guy went on to make Chappy!
