How are years of unusable weekend G service better than extended shutdowns? Night/weekend work productivity must be very poor anyway. The union must love it all though – extra hours for crazy unproductive work, and in the end when CBTC is done, we’ll still have conductors on half-length G trains.

Would you be better off taking the R to Union Sq and the L to Lorimer? Agreed it’s a pretty deranged service.

I would be better off making the trip via Mars

But yes, probably the three-seat ride crossing the same river twice with the middle seat being the notoriously slow and low-frequency local train might be better. However that’s not an option for many other destinations on the G.

It’s kind of nuts how they managed to make it that tough considering all the subway infrastructure there.

Why wouldn't you take the F to the L, for a three-seat ride? Of note, when I visited New York and stayed in hotels in LIC, I'd take the F to Marron and not the 7 to the G, because crossing the same tidal strait twice was more reliable than G transfers.

F is only going south from Carroll, so it would be F south/eastbound transfer to F north/westbound to 6th Ave in Manhattan transfer to L. I suppose you could do that but it’s wayyyy out of the way.

For the record, this is what Citymapper suggests right now:

I think I would’ve just walked to the G from the hotels (I assume the ones north of Queensbridge Houses?). I like that I can wait on the train at Court Sq., makes the wait time feel less.

The walk time was too much, and a direct F was consistently faster than 7-to-G or walk-to-G.

There's surely some union rate multiplier for work over a holiday... Especially LABOR DAY weekend

The one time the MTA sold the public on just getting things over with with one 18 month continuous shutdown, Cuomo swooped in the last possible second to completely upend the planning and outreach. Gotta be some lingering institutional trauma reaction on that one.

It doesn’t need to be anywhere near 18 mos. (they plan to have it online at the current pace in Q3 2027), and Cuomo is not governor anymore and everybody knows Hochul is not a micromanager like him.

Look I'm just offering an explanation not excusing it. I've seen this happen with other governmental orgs too where the bad habits that develop in reaction to micromanaging/abusive/whatever leadership well outlast the departure of the bad leader.

Maybe that’s the motivation, though it shouldn’t be. Certainly in New York there is a lot of overlearning from past failures, and a cynicism that anything with any resistance is not worth doing.
