I just got a package from Switzerland using UPS earlier this week. The company mentioned no shipping freezes.

It could be that UPS and/or Fedex are not (yet) affected, the message was from Swiss Post. Basically it said that now all packages - even gifts - are subject to tariffs and they don't have the capacity to process all of this, so packages to the US are currently not accepted.

Okay, that would probably explain the absurdly high shipping cost I paid on my Swiss order and why my other package from the UK was shipped using the more expensive DPD Local opposed to the cheaper and more reliable prior method of Royal Mail to USPS.

UPS, FedEx and DHL Express have their own customs clearance, the problem is regular postal carriers relied on USPS for customs clearance. USPS will not provide the service anymore so postal carriers worldwide suspended operations until god knows when.

I never knew that they have their own customs clearance, but suspected it. My new mobile phone ($670) was declared as "8.79 Electronic Gadget". No way that would have gone through Swiss Post customs like that 😂

Won't that effectively cripple the USPS as well?

Not really. They will have less revenue because only domestic parcels to deliver, for the time being. Key for understanding the problem is the difference between postal and commercial customs clearance. group.dhl.com/en/media-rel...
