Does it happen with all lenses or just that one? Check that the contacts on the lens body and the camera body are all clean. If needed use a VERY small amount of water on a cloth to rub both sets of contacts clean.

Just my 150-600mm, but my D800 had similar problems. I tried the contact cleaning tip, with no luck. I have a very good camera repair place close to home and they found internal corrosion, so I bought the D810. My long-suffering husband has just bought me a backup D810 with a shutter count of 690...

I would tend to suspect the lens rather than the camera if it is the only one causing a problem

I took the lens and D800 to Sigma when I had problems with that combination. The guy cleaned my camera and gave a good explanation why the long lenses have more focus issues with a faulty camera. I don't remember now, but it made sense at the time 😆
