A crucial moment There was a layer of mist on the lake, this morning. It hid the reflections of the tall pines that border it. When there is no wind, no movement, the perfect calm of this lake (and its mirror like reflections) are almost hypnotic. I often stop. The mist hovered a few inches above the dead still water, and the air held its distance and the promise of Autumn. I stood there. I wondered if the calm could be infectious, if the mist could obscure my own reflection. Could the still air, force my thoughts to keep their distance? I stood for several minutes, and let the world slow. It slowed, but under autumn was ozone. Under the mist were the same tired eyes. The storm was still coming, but for now, this morning, with no promises for tomorrow, the lake was calm. So I could pretend.
