My mother used to be an airline dispatcher and while it's not beyond the pale for a plane to immediately turn around after take-off... ...but that's ( USUALLY ) either due to malfunction or emergency

My stepdad was a private pilot, and if the owners of the jet weren't flying often enough sometimes he and his copilot had to do flights like this. There's apparently a certain minimum number of takeoffs and landings per quarter to maintain your qualification to fly a particular plane.
