Everything I've seen about Democrats' version of Project 2029 is far too modest and weak-kneed. Democrats need to look at the precedents Trump is setting (and shattering) and figure out how a progressive can maximally wield the power that this administration is concentrating in the executive branch.

sep 2, 2025, 6:12 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Bret @badubs.bsky.social

1/ I'm usually a moderate, too, but here is the problem with where we are at. Let's say on a spectrum -10 is far right, +10 is far left. You want balance - approximately 0. So R's come in and govern at a -6. We get back in, restore some sanity by governing at 0, and after those 2 terms. . . >>

sep 2, 2025, 6:32 pm • 1 0 • view
avatar
Bret @badubs.bsky.social

2/ . . . the Country averages out at a -3. R's get back in and again and feel they can govern -6 from that: a whopping -9, and so on. Each time we recover we can't make it back to center because we've let them move too far. To simply undo what they've done and get the starting point back . . . >>

sep 2, 2025, 6:32 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Bret @badubs.bsky.social

3/. . . to "center" requires that we go significantly to the left. Otherwise, the right-leaning infrastructure will still be there and we'll perpetually be more autocratic than democratic, more oligarchic than egalitarian.

sep 2, 2025, 6:32 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Mike @mikernfn.bsky.social

The "center" does not mean do nothing. I would be for Constitutional Amendments to reign in executive power and eliminate gerrymandering. I would be for raising taxes on the super wealthy, but to bring down our deficit, not to spend it on public grocery stores.

sep 2, 2025, 7:51 pm • 0 0 • view

Bret @badubs.bsky.social

1/ No amendments should be needed -- the Constitutional already prohibits what this Admin is doing, and in any fair reading should preclude gerrymandering. If you have a Chief Executive who simply ignores the Constitution, and a Court that shapes its interpretations to favor the exec, >>

sep 2, 2025, 8:01 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Bret @badubs.bsky.social

2/ . . . they will do the same post-Amendment. The real issue of course is that in the current environment no amendments will ever pass, but a bullheaded exec will run roughshod over the Constitution much faster than you can amend it. The only feasible counterbalance is to use the same techniques.

sep 2, 2025, 8:01 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Mike @mikernfn.bsky.social

If Democrats win the Presidency in 2028 and Republicans are finally out from under the thumb of Trump, they might more willing to consider restrictions on the executive (though probably not gerrymandering). Clear explicit Amendments have a better chance of working than laws would.

Unfortunately, the resumption of checks and balances is going to require a settlement in which the right-wing traitors and their enablers over the last two decades are no longer citizens of America, merely nationals, and thus they and their descendents aren't permitted to vote.

That and confiscating the hoarded wealth and assets of the billionaires who've bankrolled the right's descent into autocracy.

The things you’re describing really only take place under an authoritarian government. Removing the right to vote from certain people because of pol affiliation. Taking money and assets by force Just Because (as opposed to taxes). The next POTUS expands SCOTUS, but he’ll just ignore them anyway.

I love it, Mark! Everything you listed. I'd like to add that no one can run for president if they're a convicted criminal, pass a test on the Constitution, and they must show their tax returns. Reduce the age constraints, too. I'd love to see a hip wise 30 yr old instead old white men.

I would like to add to your wish list. The full repeal of the Patriot Act and the secret courts it allows. (How the eff are secret courts constitutional?) The ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment enshrining women into the constitution as equals. Repeal of prison privatization.

We won't gain anything by tanking our economy either. We have to restore the rule of law for the American economy to thrive. If the dollar is still the reserve currency, we must restore global faith in our government. Going to more extremes will only make things worse, not better.

I'm not so sure -- as long as the Democratic moves were in support of evidence-based policies and were to help the broader economy rather than to enrich a small corrupt oligarchy through grift and graft, I think the markets (including currency markets) would react just fine.

Oh, I’m sure the Congress will find their balls again once a Dem is in the Oval. There’ll be all sorts of bipartisan legislation passed to limit presidential power, which the next Rep prez will then immediately run roughshod over. We need to impeach Trump’s judicial appointees. Every single one.

But this isn’t exactly true; bc the current Court would distinguish what a Democratic president does (unconstitutional) from what a Republican president does (constitutional).

The Dominionist Christofascist equivalent would be that women simply ceased to be part of public life. They can be teachers or nurses, or stay at home mothers. That’s what republicans really want.

Dems first step -- expand the SC to 17 as part of larger judicial reform. Otherwise, current SC will declare any relevant changes unconstitutional. Second step--make DC and PR states. Eliminate federal control over DC and give Dems more electoral votes. Structural changes have to come first.
