this is a good example of how badly the far right is cooking its brains in the twitter swamps, they're all out there convinced that the country is ready to reinstitute slavery and have no conception that thermostatic backlash goes both ways

I'd say so? Basically if you push too hard one way, public opinion swings the other way - it's why the party in power tends to do poorly in midterms

ah never mind googled it! “Thermostatic politics” www.alexnowrasteh.com/p/behold-the...

“When leaders push policy toward one extreme, public preferences tend to shift in the opposite direction—and politicians often respond. But what exactly is thermostatic politics, and why does it apply to some issues and times but not others? The term, coined by political scientist Christopher Wlezien in his influential 1995 paper, likens public opinion to a household thermostat. If the political

IMO that all depends on if fascism wins. If it does there will not be any type of public backlash for that type of thinking because it will be met with the full force of government. Unless we’re talking about a 10-25 year timeline.

The best way to understand fascism is to look at fascist regimes that were not conquered externally. Often, they'll go back to being liberal. You know, once some purges have been done, especially of labor leaders and anyone who could threaten capital.
