I absolutely adore Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid but the answer to this is The Sting on the very short list of greatest heist/con movies ever and Newman and Redford put on an absolute masterclass of charm, impossible to come out of that movie without understanding their star power

Butch Cassidy was my answer as a kid, but as an adult, The Sting is one of my top movies period. I've seen people want to argue whether it's a heist movie, but good heist movies owe a lot to it either way.
It's structured like a heist movie, or maybe the other way 'round.
I like Nobody’s Fool, which shows what happens when charm is all you’ve got. And Mr. and Mrs. Bridge, where there is no charm. And The Verdict.

The Handsomeness Level in Butch & Sundance and the Sting is about as high as it can get without reaching toxic levels.
I would put Sting and Color of Money riiiiiiight behind Butch and Sundance for this.
I've long stated it among my favorite movies. It's so good. Shaw is also at the top of his game in the film as well. And I always enjoy me some good Durning.

The Sting is to almost everything that came after as LOTR is to, well, almost everything that came after it: aspects of it crop up *all over the place*, not just heist stories. It's also a lot of fun and has a fantastic cast.

The Big Con by David Maurer and "Yellow Kid" Weil, J.R.Weil's autobiography are must read books for understanding confidence men, and how all the mechanics of a con worked. Fun books. Definitely stranger than fiction. The Sting had to tone down reality.
Cool Hand Luke is also a good watch for that famous line: What we have here...is a failure to communicate.

Idk, I don’t think it moves enough to recommend to people who aren’t already bought in to Newman. I’d go: Butch & Sundance then Cool Hand Luke Then see where the person is at and either go to The Sting or The Hustler
Yeah, The Sting is absolutely a classic, but Leverage (Redemption) has spent 8 seasons doing that same plot in 45 minutes.

the entire poker scene with him and Robert Shaw is a masterpiece and he fully embodies like four different personas in it, including being the coolest guy in a room full of murderous criminals who hate him
The Sting is my all time favorite, and the only movie I still own. (Sure, I don’t have anything that can PLAY it. But still the only one.)
