They republished a portion of the tapes where he used the N word, which were obtained/published by the national enquirer. The case was whether it was newsworthy enough that he was using racial epithets. Enquirer wasn’t named in the suit bc it was brought by Thiel specifically to damage gawker.

The book about it was very good and in depth on it. TL;DR - Peter Thiel hated Gawker and waited til he had an opportunity to destroy them - Hogan sued Gawker and Thiel secretly paid for HH’s legal defense (since he didn’t have that kinda legal money) - Gawker ended up losing and went bankrupt
