Discworld QOTD, from The Fifth Elephant “‘I assure you I will not kill you,’ said Inigo. ‘I know that,’ said Vimes. ‘But will you try?’”
Discworld QOTD, from The Fifth Elephant “‘I assure you I will not kill you,’ said Inigo. ‘I know that,’ said Vimes. ‘But will you try?’”
Vimes is so cheeky
Vimes has a core of noirishness in him that no other Disc character does, and you see that here.
I remember studying detective noir at uni; one of our texts was Raymond Chandler's essay on noir detectives (and detective fiction in general), and I recognised Vimes immediately. Which is ironic, as when Pterry directly references the essay, he's narrating *Carrot*...
Val Kilmer’s “knowing he is dying of tuberculosis” Doc Holliday has this character
Vimes is always the first one to confirm: “I’m a bastard” and it’s an integral part of his appeal.
"You see, I'm a time traveler." "FROM HOW FAR BACK?"
Is the title a play on Fifth Element?
Among other things. Sir Terry Pratchett was really good with wordplay.
📌
Reminds me of Kaido in One Piece "I'm going to kill you!" "that's a bit ambitious for you, don't you think?"
With A.E. Pessimal in Thud! I initially* thought he was going to be like Inigo. He kind of went the complete opposite direction. * Pun very much intended.
Samuel "Run The Ones" Vimes
surprisingly, Discworld - which tends to take the piss out of such things - doesn't have many lines that go quite this hard but man, this one goes hard
I really adore and appreciate all the quotes you post so much
They got reading Pratchett again. Life has been so busy, I got out of the habit, so glad I’ve found them again.
Iirc the end of that one is quite brutal. Like usually the action resolves comedicly but not in unerwald
Also a big fan of Nanny Ogg's magnificent wham line in Lords And Ladies, which I *think* is the one and only time she's ever deliberately threatening (and by God does it work):
I'll see you nailed.
My favourite witch ❤️
Night Watch has some too. I'm thinking of His Grace talking to the young assassin in the cess pit and describing it as "eventually deadly". Or in Jingo when Fred Colon is remembering the Patrician was an alum of the assassin's guild and thus "not the soft option."
"The man's a thug. You can see his muscles thinking for him. And he overrides them, second by second" Or words to that effect. About Vimes
Doing pretty much the same job at the time when I read it years ago, Vimes' connection with his boots, and the boots' connection to the streets really resonated with me.
For me the Sam Vimes line that goes hardest is still "WHERE IS MY COW?"
Yes!
That man made a promise and gods be damned if he wasn’t going to keep his word to his son.
There's this one and then when Carrot just kills a guy, because a more evil man would've wasted time gloating.
"If you have to look along the shaft of an arrow from the wrong end, if a man has you entirely at his mercy, then hope like hell that man is an evil man. Because the evil like power, power over people, and they want to see you in fear. They want you to know you're going to die....
...So they'll talk. They'll gloat. They'll watch you squirm. They'll put off the moment of murder like another man will put off a good cigar. So hope like hell your captor is an evil man. A good man will kill you with hardly a word." The last sentence is repeated when Carrot kills the killer.
Which book is that from? Men at Arms?
Yes, it is from Men at Arms.
I love Carrot. Especially the "throw the book at him" moment.
As someone who can be very literal minded at times, same 😅 Not even a trace element of irony in him.
But an f-ton of iron.
I love that his kingly sword is just a Very Functional Sword
👀😁 Yes.
Reminds me of the Ghazgkull vs Angron comic. Angron: “You’ve lived your whole life for battle. Are you really going to die for some…mortal?” Ghazgkull: “SOMEONE IZ”
