we learned this already! there was about a one week period where everyone thought Google Glass was neat and then the realization kicked in and people were like, wait a minute, this is a privacy nightmare and the whole thing flopped

the season three finale of Sherlock had a blackmailing newpaper publisher who kept touching the frame of his glasses while calling up damaging information on people turned out it was a ruse and he just had a really, really good memory
I worked for Google when that was happening, I personally know every single person that worked the public facing customer service and troubleshooting team. They were given Glass as part of their job. It was banned in the call center within a day.
There is this eternal clash when things make the transition from 'something I read about and gosh it's silly how upset people are being' to 'holy SHIT I was just talking with a friend and now I have no privacy at all anymore' when stuff actually becomes real, and...people actually like private stuff
I wasn't aware that was the reason, I thought it was because it made wearers look like total nerds
We bullied the FUCK out of people to get Google Glass to go away, and we'll do it again.
And we need to do exactly the same ting and shun anyone who thinks that walking around wearing these monstrosities is appropriate behavior in civilized society.
My theory is that what caused people to realize how fucked up glass was was the clear visibility of the camera (it was just hanging on the side of the glasses). Meta has gotten away with it for as long as it has because they embed the tech in the glasses so it takes a minute to realize its there.
I think their plan is to keep erroding privacy year over year until people buy their dumb crap
On one hand, I would love glasses with a camera so I can discretely record actions because the bad faith of businesses and the government needs to be recorded, and embedded in glasses is a way to do it discretely. Unfortunately the companies pushing the tech have proven to be bad actors themselves
how some folks have forgotten the glassholes is beyond me. it really wasn't that long ago!
“The batteries weren’t charged” Lots of lies detected!!!!
Never thought we'd be bringing back the term "glassholes" in my lifetime
I was at a restaurant recently and the waitress had the Ray Bans, I didn't look at her in the face the entire night.
I think the fact that wearing Google Glass advertised that you were exactly the sort of dork who would wear Google Glass was also a big turn-off.
Google Glass allowed a new twist on found footage horror movies but even that fizzled
I mean, I get it, but isn't that basically the works we live in now? Isn't that what a lot of sci fi is? I am in no way saying it's good, but noting that ship has sailed and you can't actually get it back in port.
Bold of you to think anyone can recall 2014
Amazing that Google and Meta, with mobs of user interface designers, don’t understand that the main user interface for humans is *our face* and therefore putting something invasive on top of our face is really stupid.
This gives me an idea for a guerilla PSA campaign
“The batteries aren’t charged”. Ah, okay then!
