the internet did deliver on its promise to connect people and spread ideas around the world and unfortunately the ideas that it is best at spreading are conspiratorial and fascist

I truly believe it's the commercial, ad-driven internet that does this. All the wrong incentives at play.

It connects isolated people. Some of them were isolated for bad reasons, and some of them were isolated for good reasons.

It allowed conspiracy theorists to move from poorly distributed zines to networks of related websites and videos, which, of course, only made it easier for all of them to spread well beyond the limits of what they could before.

I think part of the problem was/is the instant gratification and democratization of ideas and information. People weren’t content with knowing and accepting the same info as everybody so in their pursuit of feeling unique started gobbling and adopting conspiratorial ideas

Unfortunately, many people have very bad ideas and are a bad influence on those around them

The internet also dissolves common narratives/reality that centralized mass media of old used to create. Instead, we increasingly are siloed off in social media realities with completely different understanding of the world will live in from some of our fellow citizens.

Strongly reminded of this line by Douglas Adams regarding his version of the universal translator

I don't think that's true. The internet was deliberately taken over and enclosed by big money, same as other public spaces and resources... and they are using it to spread fascist propaganda, because they want us all divided and fighting each other so we don't organise against them.

I agree, but also this didn’t happen in a vacuum. One problem is the bad actors actively exploiting our vulnerabilities to sow divisions have largely gone unchallenged, and there’s a lack of significant, organised, well funded defence mechanisms against these well-oiled disinformation machines.
