Google Docs is usually my go-to for document writing, but what is WITH all the AI? It almost unusable now. The Gemini UI barges in and appears wherever I'm going to type, and there are constant "would you like me to write/re-word this for you?" pop ups... why would you DO this to your own product?

Yesterday, my mom updated her Android system, and they replaced the main button Turn Off function with Call Gemini 🙃 Had to dwell into setting to find how to reverse it.

All these AI tech bros dying to get rich from it know that a HUGE portion of us HATE it and the only way to get us to use it is forcing it upon us and I, for one, will pass on it every single time.

It’s even worse in Microsoft Word. Copilot makes awful stylistic suggestions, and tries to “correct” fictional statements even if you’re writing… fiction.

There’s no way to opt out?? That’s bullshit. I have all of it disabled on my iMac and phone. Maybe it’s ego or hubris or whatever but I would be completely insulted that an AI bot thought it could write better than me.

My guess is that some software engineering manager has "number of Gemini features added to product" as an annual performance review metric. 🤷

It's almost like it wants to take over. Everything I write, suddenly it sticks its head in the door "do you want me to re-write that for you?" -- NO! That's why I'm typing it! But it keeps on coming, again and again with no way to turn it off even though they have settings for every other thing. GAH

Same thing happened to me with MS Word. Had to cancel my subscription so that I could get a non-AI version of it 🙄 I really don't know why they keep adding AI to everything, often without the option to disable it

This has been the case for everything in the Google Suite of products. They started with their search engine, and its bankrupt businesses and eviscerated e-commerce. Nobody who makes these decisions will be held responsible when the AI bubble finally bursts, and layoffs will be the answer.

The most obnoxious thing is when I stop typing for a few seconds to figure out phrasing and it pops up "Want AI to finish this?" at my cursor. (Alas, workplaces where execs have drunk the kool-aid often admin-remove the account-level opt-out.)

Working to build the world of tomorrow where people no longer have to think for themselves. The disturbing part is we've had tons of movies about this very issue, but we have yet to fully deviate from this path.

Amen. A friend and I churned out stacks of home-brew gaming expansions using Google Docs over the last two years. At first it was great, I'd even do tons of editing on my phone. Now I can't do more than 5 minutes without it devouring my mobile battery. Its janky and intrusive. We've moved on.
