The government and ruling class have always been very, very sensitive about not turning the military into a public spectacle aside from during remembrance

Yeah, apart from Changing of the Guard, Trooping the Colour, State Opening of Parliament etc (they're all real soldiers), and Northern Ireland between 1969 and 2007. Never see men (or women) in uniform on the streets of Britain.
