I have acquaintances with close family in Iran. It very much is like this from what they've said (though there are aspects of staying in Iran that they genuinely think well of, but not really thanks to the regime)

Yeah there are people in my father's shul who still have family there and the regime is very suspicious of Jews all the time, to say the least

Same here. So many talk about really wanting/needing to go back to see sick parents and love the country, but they are also terrified of getting arrested or other problems.
