OneDrive is malware. Change my mind 😡
OneDrive is malware. Change my mind 😡
The second i set up a new OS this shit gets booted immediately.
Counterpoint: malware actually works.
😂
You're being melodramatic, it's not spy/malware. It just your everyday involuntary distributed AI training set. Building SkyNet 1 bug filled Excel macro at a time. Breaks over time to hide my data on the internet like a squirrel hides his nuts in the grass.
Legit so pissed that my new PC has everything automatically go to OneDrive instead of, y'know... The fuckin DOCUMENTS FOLDER
A case of if it's not broken don't "fix" it
Nah, you're good.
I'm not running out of space I have a hard drive! I don't want more space. Get out of my files!
I hate OneDrive with the passion of a thousand suns. I want to save to my MFing hard drive, not to oneDrive. Ever.
No 🙂↔️ I wont
Physical drives are so cheap and massive these days there is no reason to not store/backup local. Stop selling your soul to the cloud. Remember there is no plan B.
Hate it.
i spent an entire hour following a tutorial to get my screenshots to save LOCALLY instead of to onedrive. even just that process is so stupidly obfuscated. it’s absolutely malware
But what if you need to autosync a file to the cloud and not have a local copy but also not have a cloud copy because the sync failed and kept the file in a limbo state where it didn't save at all and then have to spend an hour rebuilding it?
Microsoft Windows is the Meta-Malware, which holds all of it together. Mind changed?
In the 1970s a coworker told me about a time they paid IBM for an upgrade to their system, so IBM came in and actually removed something, thus making the system run much better. Maybe the next billionaire could well be someone who figures out how to remove Onedrive, #amiright?
100% agreed
It really isn’t. Your actual malware doesn’t come with corporate management restrictions, and a tendency to quit working silently, requiring a couple of reboots of all of your machines.
Excel saving copies of files to OneDrive though the original is local.
I made my career on the .Net platform and every morning I wake up praying MS announced bankruptcy and total shutdown. I use a MacBook and a Pop_OS/Ubuntu machine. Windows is a VM so I can work on legacy code.
Each time windows updates: "Let's setup onedrive 😊" Has to be one of the most annoying modern tactics of not asking and just plain demanding to do it
thats what external drive is made for
Definition> Malware: any code or snippet of code that executes unwanted, undesired, or malicious actions on a machine..... I would claim 95% of all software today falls under this definition.
Yeah, people focusing on one thing to hate on it is getting annoying at this point, half of humanity fails to notice that it doesn't matter anymore what takes your data when literally everything you do will take all your data.
Today is all about damage control. The biggest issue is nobody is teaching OPSEC or NETSEC. Everyone thinks syncing things is good. And the complete lack of security is terrifying, tbh.
It's why I won't have a Ring doorbell and avoid Alexa like a plague ship. Who wants to give Bezos all your comings and goings for free? Who wants their refrigerator to tell Haier or Whirlpool their habits?
Besides the fact that I'm moderately certain Alexa and other devices monitor connected devices, any unencrypted communications, and other private telemetrics. No proof, just feels like a thing they would do.
And then there's literally any phone in your area just listening in on all your conversations. My brother doesn't play Genshin Impact or most of any videogames at all, but since I talk about Genshin near him, he suddenly gets ads about it all the time. We talk about anything and ads will appear.
Which is why step one is to remove all programs with such facilities, and block those you cannot. I tend to get ads from all over the world, trackers dunno what I am
Microsoft Windows itself is malware - change *my* mind.
Nope, no intention of trying. Win11 is increasingly broken malware. Maybe it's only saving grace is that it is broken so it can't do all it's malware tricks.
I disagree. Malware has to not crash before it can run XD
malware software that is specifically designed to disrupt, damage, or gain unauthorized access to a computer system. The only one you could counter point would be the last which that would make pretty much all companies malware
You know what else starts with "m" and ends with "e?" McAfee
Why do path names include “sharepoint”?
OneDrive isn’t malware, it’s just Windows attempt to do iCloud badly. They stuffed it into the OS so hard it feels invasive, but at its core it’s just Microsoft’s version of iCloud/Google Drive.😀
That rewires where your user folders go, so when they fill up they can send you frequent annoying alert notifications that OH NO YUR ALMOS OUT O SPACE pay us to make em go away
The entire 365 platform is malware...
Also, my point still stands. www.ghacks.net/2025/08/27/y...
Super agree. I'm in the process of making sure all backups are on physical drives and I've never been more vindicated
I'd rather be liberated than vindicated. I replaced my NAS with OneDrive a couple years ago and now I don't have to worry about maintaining it or doing something stupid that would screw it up. More people with far more expertise work to make sure OneDrive is reliable. I much prefer outsourcing.
One drive reliable? It's a pain in the butt to support, it's a pain in the butt if the data connection is bad, it's offloading all *your* data to someone else's computers who will hand it over to the US government and will use it for AI training.
Wow, conspiracy theory much? Do you have any actual... you know... EVIDENCE that Microsoft is doing any such thing with personal data uploaded to the cloud? Because even a cursory search on the subject revealed nada. Better log off quick. Microsoft is surely watching you right now...
I didn't say they are, but US law explicitly says that US companies are required to hand over data wherever in the world they keep it, irrespective of any other countries laws. There, actual evidence of the risk. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/CLOUD_Act
Guess what! If law enforcement gets a warrant they can walk into your house and take your NAS, too, and you'll have all your stuff neatly boxed up for them and ready to go. Law enforcement can take anything from anyone if they can justify cause to the judiciary. This isn't pro-NAS evidence.
But I am not in the USA so US LEO can go fuck themselves and their warrant, they have to go via the UK courts, whereas if I use a US cloud provider my data may just be passed over without my knowing.
And if the UK courts give a warrant then UK LEO can still walk into your house and take your neatly boxed up NAS of personal information. You can squabble over which jurisdiction is more trustworthy but at the end of the day your evidence still isn't pro-NAS. [insert government] can still get it.
In fact I'd argue it could be harder for government to get data from a megacorporation than from you via warrant by simple virtue that megacorps have all manner of compliances and teams of lawyers to make sure law enforcement demands are above board. Do you have those resources? I think not.
About the AI part. Isn't that something that even google include nowdays in their TOS?
Ok glowie
That's your prerogative. I was just bitching to the void honestly, I never thought this post would gain the steam it has 💀 My main complaint is that it stopped my computer from doing what I ask, and it's subscription based. Everyone can do as they see fit with their own systems ✌️
Most of my stuff is on a NAS where my machines make automatic backups through rsync. This little NAS is the only reason of why I still have my shit after a house fire. Non volatile stuff like. OS isos, game isos/roms, app installers. Are separated from the NAS in independent external rugged drives.
I agree. Everything on local NAS, a backup to another local NAS, and one extra backup to OneDrive 🤪
I don’t change people’s minds when they’re already correct.
Microsoft is bloatware within malware.
It won't let me delete the backups, but I'm being told it's super easy to buy more space 💀
When I cancelled I left feedback strongly criticizing the "forever payment" model. For all the good it may do 😮💨
Not as bad as a Teams infection, but definitely a Trojan.
Local is Local
It's caused me more inconvenience and annoyance than all malware I've dealt with combined so I'm inclined to agree
You can delete it without having to restore your drives? 🤷♂️
windows is malware. Don't use windows except you are working at home and you need specific apps of course. But first find out if you can run them on linux or if there are linux alternatives.
I've used Dropbox for years. Not about to start using OneDrive now.
Got rid if the virus that is windows. Setting up a home lab. Debian is so easy to use, so much better
*copy* *paste* *copy* *paste* *copy* 'ERROR: The clipboard is in use by another programme' *Raises one eyebrow* Windows:
Also, all Google software is malware.
yep no longer use chrome and ecosia is now my search engine.
It's ALL about sticking adverts in front of you.
It’s malware you agree to the terms of service of.
Even lawyers don’t read those.
And they know it. It’s a kinder, gentler malware.
Agreed, along with every other MS product...
This reminds me; when I got my new laptop, I thought I was saving files to my local drive, and noticed it said my OneDrive was full. Sure enough, it quietly sent my files there! So, I naturally went and turned ALL the Onedrive settings off and transferred my files back to local. THANKS BILL GATES
BUT BESTIE... You mean to say that you DON'T want your icons suddenly getting rearranged, and after stopping the service, POOF goes your desktop? I mean, surely you stopping the service and uninstalling OneDrive was a silly mistake, tee-hee! So we'll reinstall on every update! :D
😂
Windows is malware
I love uploading everything I just downloaded!
babe I'm kind of with you
Absolutely agree. Specifically ransomware. Ditched. Now using Linux Mint.
You speak truth. I like truth. I don't want to change your mind.
Malware makes your OS unusable. Spyware helps someone steal your data or target you with unwanted advertising. Windows has built-in malware, but OneDrive is spyware.
You make a valid point!
I suppose if we are going to be technical though, all spyware is malware which means OneDrive is malware too.
Im malware too
Has anyone actually seen the mounds of shit Microsoft ships with Windows and went "wow, so kind of them, this is so convenient and useful and safe!"???
I would love to meet that person honestly. Out of psychological interest
😂
It’s from Microsoft. I’m shocked it runs well enough to function as malware…
Eh... For anyone with decent computer knowledge, sure. But for dopey regular users, it works pretty well.
oh, and another thing - Adobe Acrobat and its license system slows our users computers down and stops working - just make it work.
add Teams to that MS installs it automatically - and on domain networks they really want you to setup a MS account for what.....
Switch to Libre Office. Use Dropbox instead.
so far my favorite newish microsoft platform user experience is outlook scraping the text, presumably about once per second or two. I went to hit "send" on an email about how my coworker forgot their attachment in their last reply, and a dialog box pops up: "did you forget your attachment?" ☠️clippy
