Guys, I was singled out in new faculty orientaiton today as "an AI hater" in a group of 20 new faculty, including the director of the "center for teaching excellence." 1) we're up against a lot, and 2) we're doomed. Feel like I need an infusion of support from my "AI hater" comrades on bsky.

Seriously, I went from doing lots of of AI-in-music research in 2021-22 to wanting to have nothing to do with it. The people who get labeled "AI haters" or "AI skeptics" are usually just the people who understand it the best
what those dipshits need is 1) to be an AI because nobody else will want to read and grade the AI essays that their students don't want to write 2) an AI to lead the discussions their students won't want to attend and 3) to look for a new job that wants people who don't actually want to be there.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that. There are ways to resist this slop; it won't be easy, but people looking for that easy way out that AI falsely promises will most likely not want to fight as hard as we "AI haters" will.

I would expect that more of tenured / experienced faculty, I guess, than of a group of new faculty. I'm just old and tired of bullshit. I don't mind standing my ground--the worst that could happen to me, getting fired/denied tenure, has already happened. So this feels like small potatoes 🤷♀️
Hey one of the 3 components of evidence based medicine is the patient’s values and as a patient my values include having doctors who don’t look up treatments in an LLM.

I hate how much this predicts my life in a couple weeks. I'm more or less resigned to being made to feel like an oddball for the crime of...sticking to the same teaching values and principles I've had for a quarter century.
I think that's the thing: I've been teaching longer than literally anyone in the room (23 years).

I hate the avoidance of thinking and the widespread acceptance of sub-mediocre work that goes along with AI.
It's presented as a way to give students an advantage, but if you really think, you understand that people with advantages have real people coaching them, and the divide will grow as long as these AI sycophants keep pushing this shit. I say this as an undergrad pell grant recipient.
I can’t see how “use this shortcut without really understanding what you’re doing” (and pay to do it!) is much of an advantage, let alone an education. That’s what I see med students doing now and the change from one year to the next was drastic.
It’s especially alarming that med students are using it now. And if it’s anything like the change between college student “writing” between the spring of 2023 and the fall of 2024, it *is* drastic.
Med school professors are using it now. I’m a librarian and we get questions about it all the time. At this point though we’re starting to get involvement from non-early adopter faculty who want to know how to deal w it, how to teach skepticism and questioning on AI. That’s encouraging.
I asked Jeeves and he said singling out anyone in new faculty orientation for anything other than being amazing is a dick move.

Huge AI hater here. I kind of won’t shut up about it at work (still at a public library,) and keep bringing up concerns about it (ethically, environmentally, etc) at meetings in hopes of, at the very least, some “cautionary” policy getting put into place
I have an older coworker who was initially very taken in by aspects of it, but several of us have discussed the devastating effects of it often enough that even he has now made it a goal to write an info sheet for patrons on avoiding misinformation and other pitfalls.
