Are undead creatures like zombies and liches better as villains or tragic figures? #fantasyreaders

I know the trend may be to love your poor, vulnerable zombies, but my understanding is zombies are tools of a nefarious wizard. As tools, they sure can be either or both. I personally, would show a real zombie little compassion. That said, the Romero film hero took a bullet in friendly fire.
