Like everything, it’s how you use them. I feel, for most tropes that are historically overused you need a new and interesting take to avoid just adding a bucket of dull to your plot.

I do think we’ve got to the point where just having a ‘the prophecy is wrong/evil’ twist is in itself becoming overused and doesn’t constitute an interesting take any more.
