I guess some of you are unaware that US police are shooting and killing more people than ever this year. Why would a National Guards person shooting a civilian cause any more consternation than what we experience already to the tune of at least 3 people a day?

This sucks but it might if the victim were white and upper-middle-class enough.

To be honest with you, I don't think even that would make much of a difference. May move from a one day story to a 3 day one.

I dunno. That was a while ago. We had newspapers and shit back then, and even then a lot of people thought they deserved it.

yeah, so it wouldn't cause any consternation.

Democratic governors, if .047 sends troops that qualifies as a call to send your guard to where they are and roust them out. They are causing a problem for which you can call out the guard and get them out of your state. That may be one way to counter fascist moves.

Speaking broadly, if three people a day isn’t enough wouldn’t 300 people? That is just to illustrate there is a line where it becomes something that the nation as a whole cares about. That’s obviously repulsive to think about, 3 people a day not being enough for some, but it’s unfortunately reality

You can't claim 'Violence is never the answer" when violence is public policy

Police have killed 826 people in the U.S. so far in 2025. There have been 1 days so far in 2025 when police did not kill people in the U.S..

But don’t expect them to go in to a school with an active shooter to protect the littles. Just killing many innocent people and many harmless but with mental issues.

Kent State is not a relevant historical touch point for 2025 USA.

Even in Ohio, Kent State was not treated as the horror it was. People in my grandparents’ and even in my parents’ age cohort felt that students deserved to be punished for a disruptive and destructive action (setting the ROTC office on fire). People will still say, “They should have been peaceful.”

I think it depends on which circles you ran in. I grew up in Kent and had family on the hill. So, yeah kind of a big meaningful thing and a horror. You're right there were trials and my godfather got on the jury and annualed it. They ended up dropping the cases after, rather than retry them.

For the conservative law and order types this was obviously a different experience, but it did serve as a touch point and still does otherwise why reference it at all? Everyone in this conversation seemingly knows the importance. Whether it should I suppose is a debate.

Exactly. On an average year, US Police murder two unarmed Civilians a week. The majority of their victims are Black or former Military people in crisis. No we have "I support the military" and "I support the police" crowd screaming about the military on US streets.

Absolutely. Violent crime is down, unless you count police shootings, which are poised to break last year’s record
