It's more than a *messaging* failure that a significant percentage of the country didn't know that tariffs are a tax on the consumer [almost always]. It's a complete lack of political education AND of the public's curiosity.

Yes. I ordered something from Japan and learned pretty much everything I needed to know. About American tariffs. From the Japanese seller. We're just collectively a poorly informed people.

It is totally a #messaging failure every time that Democrats called these "tarifs" rather than "national sales tax."

Are you counting the absolute failure of the media covering the campaign to explain what tariffs are and how they work as part of political education?

Some people will absolutely refuse to admit they are wrong, till their dying breath. Will tariffs be Trumps “Rosebud”? I would approve an AI of that. Otherwise, I hate the stuff.

Fascists, from time immemorial, "kill" public school education and the teachers first. People who have a basic understanding of the history and civics of their own nation, and the ability to reason and think critically, will never vote away their own rights. Religions and fascists hate that.

Also, the topics they could tap into to get people energized would put the whole system at risk. It’s definitely not just cowardice, they know how to fight against any collective action. They walk a tightrope to maintain the status quo and keep reliving 1992 over and over.

The dumbing down of America has been going on for decades. The implementation of Fox News as the right wing propaganda network further dumbed down the electorate. It plays on military bases, hospitals, airports, etc. Right wing social media algorithms have done the most damage at the fastest rate.

When the discussion on tariffs first started my mind kept reverting to the Boston Tea Party as a reference since it’s the only time I could recall discussing/learning about tariffs in any way. We’re taught to expect “taxes and fees” or “shipping & handling” and usually don’t look much further.

A severe failure of the teaching of a sanitized Social Studies/History/Civics. It been happening so long, many of us can’t even conceive of what we were denied. Most of what I learned about McKinley and Coolidge was after I left college.

What really REALLY sucks about Trump's reelection is that it makes perfect sense. He represents so clearly what this nation mostly is: chest thumping, uncurious, money obsessed, bigoted, violent, etc. That's not ALL the US is, but...
