It's more than a *messaging* failure that a significant percentage of the country didn't know that tariffs are a tax on the consumer [almost always]. It's a complete lack of political education AND of the public's curiosity.

Yes. I ordered something from Japan and learned pretty much everything I needed to know. About American tariffs. From the Japanese seller. We're just collectively a poorly informed people.
Very poorly informed and it's detrimental.
It is totally a #messaging failure every time that Democrats called these "tarifs" rather than "national sales tax."
Are you counting the absolute failure of the media covering the campaign to explain what tariffs are and how they work as part of political education?
Some people will absolutely refuse to admit they are wrong, till their dying breath. Will tariffs be Trumps “Rosebud”? I would approve an AI of that. Otherwise, I hate the stuff.
Fascists, from time immemorial, "kill" public school education and the teachers first. People who have a basic understanding of the history and civics of their own nation, and the ability to reason and think critically, will never vote away their own rights. Religions and fascists hate that.
Americans are drones who live in their bubbles and go to work and don’t engage with politics or the issues that determine their everyday lives!
Is there any way to improve this that’s not gonna take a generation of work?
is just political education???
I think people will only face reality when there's nowhere left to hide. Like, when they've lost everything and there's no other explanation. Normalcy is just too comfortable
It is eternally frustrating to have one side outright lying and the other side not wanting to talk about it because their internal polling says not to
Also, the topics they could tap into to get people energized would put the whole system at risk. It’s definitely not just cowardice, they know how to fight against any collective action. They walk a tightrope to maintain the status quo and keep reliving 1992 over and over.
Definitely part of the problem for them is the Republicans are only the most immediate part of the problem
The dumbing down of America has been going on for decades. The implementation of Fox News as the right wing propaganda network further dumbed down the electorate. It plays on military bases, hospitals, airports, etc. Right wing social media algorithms have done the most damage at the fastest rate.
i can literally see that my very spartan grocery bill goes up week by week but maybe i should vibe budget more
I’ve been saying this for a few months and how these are costs on consumers, strain the economy, often lead to recession, and also geopolitically have implications for other countries. Rich make a killing in the process bsky.app/profile/farh...
Heads they win, tails you lose because the invisible hand is a pickpocket
The public's curiosity is not really encouraged. Some would even say it's frowned upon.
It's also a lack of listening to the experts and thinking Trump is a good business man, because he said so!
Where the hell is Schumer?????
Composing sternly worded letters and counting the take.
It’s a lack of education. This really exposes our education system in the U.S.
As someone who spent months trying to explain this to people before the election, this one hurts :(
Yeah, it should have been a major campaign thing for Harris. Just blast TARRIFS ARE TAXES continuously.
I did some volunteer work with the campaign social media team, and I know that I put it out there 100 times a day sometimes (although I get that the larger campaign should have done it a LOT more)
I saw it alot and them doing it more would not have made a difference imo.
They had lost the fight long before that...but, I was hoping people would at least understand that we are the ones who pay the tariffs (they are taxes)...sigh
When the discussion on tariffs first started my mind kept reverting to the Boston Tea Party as a reference since it’s the only time I could recall discussing/learning about tariffs in any way. We’re taught to expect “taxes and fees” or “shipping & handling” and usually don’t look much further.
A severe failure of the teaching of a sanitized Social Studies/History/Civics. It been happening so long, many of us can’t even conceive of what we were denied. Most of what I learned about McKinley and Coolidge was after I left college.
AND. such an important conjunction to put in this equation.
I tried to explain this to family members pre-election and they were incurious and now they are losing their shit on how so many things they regularly ordered are out of reach financially.
Please see mee and read my story Plese dont egnour me agin💔💔
What really REALLY sucks about Trump's reelection is that it makes perfect sense. He represents so clearly what this nation mostly is: chest thumping, uncurious, money obsessed, bigoted, violent, etc. That's not ALL the US is, but...
Yeah. As someone who has literally been curious since I first drew breath, I ... have no effing clue how to solve this. Do you have any ideas?
Well, now you have an excellent example for what it means to FAFO
How about 30 years of Rupert Murdoch's Fox (dare not call it News)?
Not to mention a lack of responsibility on the part of the jounalists who aren't doing the correct research or asking the right questions of officials.
It's impressive because every time it hits the news and it's not a Republican talking, it's explained that the importer, not the foreign country, paying the tariff. And then people forget. It's like there's a spell cast on them or something.
it's literally "trickle-down costs" boom, DNC pay me a million fucking dollars there's your messaging
Apathy abounds and locks all in a stupor of ignorance
If only there were an opposition party with access to a huge messaging machine
and a media determined not to educate them. Dems can message all they want to but if it's not covered that way because most reporters think that the 8chan rejects on twitter are "mainstream" it never goes anywhere outside of political messages.
Do these people not shop for their own groceries?
