Umbrella review-of-reviews (n=56) finds consistent association between starting to vape & subsequent smoking in youth (vapers ~3x more likley to progress that non-vapers) + vaping harms tobaccocontrol.bmj.com/content/earl...

Would these young folk have gone straight to smoking if Vapes had not been introduced? Compare age-sex specific smoking rates before and after introduction of Vapes.

Guess what association doesn't equal? Studies of youth uptake of substances (including nicotine) find that kids who try substances have differences from those who do not, at age 9-10, PRIOR to any use. Kids who like to try stuff, like to try other stuff. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

Jon, Jon .. as you well know, this is just a game played by those who know that no ethics c'tee would ever approve an RCT which would satisfy your evidence. So just keep repeating it, eh? simonchapman6.com/2023/01/20/v...

Simon, here is the latest data on US youth past 30 day cigarette smoking and nicotine vaping. Look at that increase in smoking following the big increase in nicotine vaping 2018-19...oh wait, youth smoking rates just continued to fall to historic lows (0.4% of 12 graders now daily cig smokers).

...and kids who smoke cigarettes are more likely to vape, and kids why smoke MJ are more likely to do both etc etc. But the evidence that any of these are causal is very weak. The ABCD study is showing us its probably not causal at all. The kids who later used substances were different at age 10.
