Yes, but those Russian troops were unprepared and vulnerable. Unfortunately Russia has learned lessons from this and mined the hell out of Eastern Ukraine. The hard truth is that unless Russia collapses, Ukraine does not have the resources to take back the 20% of their country that was stolen.

In may 1944 the Wehrmacht had taken the most territory it would take out of France in the whole of WWII. Any dickhead can pick an arbitrary date and go look they are winning.
