That's basically putin's plan. He wanted the oblasts he doesn't hold. He gets it with that. The ruzzians aren't going to accept going back 40kms or even 20kms. They'd want it on Ukraine's side, which basically hands them Zaporizhzhia! Have these European leaders lost their minds???
They need to create the buffer zone on NATO territory if they don't plan on supporting Ukraine more. Russia will only stop when it is stopped.

Donβt think that would work in sectors in the Pokrovsk direction. The best Ukrainian defensive lines would be consumed I think. Russians have got enough Ukrainian land anyway without making more land unusable and uninhabitable. Fvck them.

The number of servicemembers needed to patrol the border also remains a concern. Officials are discussing from 4,000 to around 60,000 troops. French and British forces will likely make up the core of the foreign troop presence, countries are lobbying other allies to help provide military assets.
If the plan is to patrol the full length of the border then even 60,000 troops would act as little more than a symbolic deterrent; and based on earlier statements, the COTW might struggle to reach this number. As always, the US security guarantee is critical to success, and therefore a key concern.
I'm not sure that Russia will agree to retreat to 40km back from the 1991 borders, but hey here's optimism right? Ukraine can claim that territory as a DMZ once Russia fragments anyway.
The buffer zone needs to be on the Russian side of the border.
How will this buffer zone be arranged? unless I'm mistaken, 40 km of buffer zone along the front line is 60,000 km2, equivalent to 2 occupied Oblasts, 10% of Ukraine! And this in addition to the de facto occupied zones? When will we stop penalizing the victim!? NATO in the AFU! Period.
