I mean, "its doctrine remains vague" but the statements from French leadership have been quite clear, and for it to offer a Europe-wide nuclear umbrella (potentially along with the UK) requires agreement from the wider community, they can't just update their stated doctrine unilaterally.

The Mutual Defence Agreement began in 1958. It can be ended by either party. The UK would have to join up with France instead of the US, and presumably be funded by NATO or Europe. Personally I think we need to chuck the US out of NATO along with all their European bases.

If the US decided to end the contract, the UK would still have useable nukes. The UK would then need to develop its own nukes - which is expensive. So, for the purpose of independently being able to fire a nuclear weapon, the UK is independent. But yes, Trident is US designed and manufactured.
