In a way, you are both right. 1. While crime is down recently, it still remains high in a few areas, but not nearly as much as Republicans make it out to be. 2. My original post was poorly written. I meant to say that perceptions of crime remain high for many people for whom crime is a concern. 1/3
3. For people who remain afraid of crime, citing statistics about falling crime rates will have little effect. Fear of crime is partly emotional, partly based on political affiliation, and explicit and implicit racism. How do you convince these people they are wrong? I don't know if we can. 2/3
Does this mean that progressives should give up? No. But it does mean we need to carefully pick our battles. Counter false Republican narratives about crime when you can, but focus on other issues, such as Trump's fascist takeover of our government and how he is crashing the economy, etc. 3/3
