It was a choice by less than a third of the electorate, another third voted against it, and nobody else asked for it.
The inconvenience of being encouraged to wear masks to prevent the spread of a virus that could easily kill their kid’s elderly teacher within days was enough for them to abandon proven science. Privileged Republicans feel confident THEY can still access state of the art medical treatment as needed.

With vaccination for a respiratory infection, “leave me alone” doesn’t really work, since anyone who goes in public inherently doesn’t leave others alone. But I take your point, they’ve gone a lot further than “I won’t take this,” reaching “and people who opt in can’t either.”

Americans saw the greatest vaccine rollout in history. A virus partially shut down society and vaccination opened it back up. Many know someone killed or hospitalized by COVID, virtually none know anyone harmed by the vaccine. Lived experience screamed VACCINES GOOD. Voters went the other way.
Obviously Trump wasn’t responsible for mRNA vaccines but within the unwritten rules of electoral politics everywhere he could’ve taken full credit for it. That he went this direction instead is both wild and horrifying.
It was the one good thing from his first term, the one thing that even political opponents acknowledged as positive and beneficial.
