On social media, I'm seeing lots of my colleagues boxing up their collections & taking them out of their classrooms/schools entirely. Teachers in Alberta have been subsidizing our public education system. Those learning materials & opportunities are being removed because of the UCP.
And the school boards followed the Ministerial order and listed all books with “explicit sexual content,” and then Smith freaks out because it includes more books than the ones her base wanted banned (I.e., queer and gay content.) 🤦🏼♀️
EXACTLY. EPSB had handled this perfectly. They can’t refuse to comply, because that would likely result in the gov’t firing the board, & taking over EPSB. So they OVER complied, and made absolute fools of Smith & her education minister. Good on EPSB. SO PROUD OF THEM.

Please, for the sake of Canada, get that corrupt useless government out of office. I was a teacher in Alberta but left in 2021. It was nutty then, and it's fucking brutal now.
You've succinctly described the whole situation. My school district has also advised closing access to classroom libraries until digital lists are created. The digital book list demand by the UCP is an unrealistic burden and has resulted in widespread book bans across Alberta classrooms. Effin UCP!
My kid is faculty of ed at U of A. I’m so worried that when they are finished at Uni, they’ll take a job in a different province because who the fuck wants to be a teacher under this fascist regime of a government, you know?
Exactly and sadly so. It would be so tough to be in uni. and watch the Alberta Ed. sh*t show unfolding. This year, start-up was especially demoralising. Education in Alberta is already challenging and to have the UCP culture war added to the pile is next level disgusting. All the best to your child.
