"Germ theory" is also not current understanding. Bacteria, viruses, and fungi could all be considered "germs" but differ from each other. Mercury poisoning and mesothelioma (asbestosis) are caused by airborne particles, ie "miasma." Genetic diseases like polycystic kidneys are caused by neither.

Agree and I think that's one of the big reasons the people coming down on NPR were so forceful. Rightly or wrongly they are held to a higher standard than most media so the assumption is it has to be bad faith here not ignorance. (hell just use theory and Theory here and fixes a big part of it.)

The only problems are that humoral theory was popular into the Middle Ages, which makes it the wrong "wisdom of the ancient", and it isn't incompatible with the germ theory of disease. To the point that people who accepted it were a crappy microscope away from figuring it out in the 12th century.
