Why is germ theory in the same air quotes as "miasma theory," I ask as a historian of medicine who is very very tired
Why is germ theory in the same air quotes as "miasma theory," I ask as a historian of medicine who is very very tired
"iTs OnLy A tHeOrY"...
Surprised the fucker doesn't believe in the sickness of the humours... Unenlightened dipshit!!
Make Berghof Sanatorium Great Again!
I think the brain worm explains RFK Jr even better
the author forgot that they're only meant to give as much wait to debunked science when talking about trans healthcare
We can and should take steps to make the environment we live in healthy, to eat well, get exercise, get sufficient sleep & have a supporting social system. But to substitute that in place of proven vaccines & treatments that are highly effective for known germ-based maladies is just plain stupid.
📌
BothSides. Always. It’s easier than actually working for a living.
NPR, WaPo, NYT, ABC, CBS all have become outright hostile to truth. It is not only frustrating but dangerous to the public and they will get people killed to stay in trump’s good graces. They should all be burned to ash, loaded into a rocket and shot to Mars never to be heard from again.
Bro has been playing too much Dwarf Fortress
He probably plays Crusader Kings 2 as to enjoy the high rates of dead babies.
Hey, now, CK3 has been out for a while
They nerfed the infant mortality rate which displeases RFK Jr.
NPR proving each day that they’re not up to the task of reporting on a fascist regime without gargling dictator balls on the daily.
This stuff really gets my choler and black bile flowing.
smbc-wiki.com/index.php/20... (not really relevant, but I thought you might find this amusing, at least!)
I read about Germ/Miasma theory and it was really interesting, particularly the battle to publish... but I now question the benefits of academic/science comms! Perhaps it was easier when non-academics didn't know!
"Because it is also just a theory!" yammers the idiot in the red hat. "You're thinking of a hypothesis." *pause, thoughts grind* "Them hippos spreading it round instead of bats, are they?"
You mean "medicine."
Jesus. NPR is worse than I thought.
Because @npr.org is the ‘easy bake oven’ of journalism
Those are funding defense quotes
And yet he thought it was okay to bathe with his grandkids in a fetid stream. So apparently he doesn't believe in anything
Why because they're both theories and they don't want to be seen taking sides or something something.
The Roadkill Vaccines should be spectacular!
Media both siderism is destroying us in so many ways.
It's actually not air quotes/scare quotes. In both cases, it denotes a phrase. It's clunky.
I feel you, historian of medicine! It's like, I get it, germ theory is a theory, but come on, it's not like we're still debating whether the earth is flat. And don't even get me started on the hippos vs bats thing...
Why is it even described as a theory when it's proven fact?
people are replying to my critiques of the headline like I'm crazy. Like how do they not see the issue with this framing?? NPR has got to do better.
Journalistic malpractice abounds and people are so used to it they don’t even recognise it
I asked myself the very same question!
Mother fucking RFKjr must be some back ass time traveler from the dark ages That's the only logical explanation for his bizarre beliefs That or too much heroin burnt out his brain circuits
Where did he get his medical degree? Oh, right….
i'd probably believe in miasma too, if every photo of me looked like a FromSoftware mob
Exactly what I thought. What germ 'theory'? I appreciate it's slightly more complex, but sick of news presenting the far-right's ideas as 'as valid as the scientifically backed truth'.
I had the exact same thought. Next he'll be advocating for bloodletting.
NPR is now fully on the “normalization of Trump and staff” train.
Next he’ll say we should go back to barbers doing surgery.
Yes #NPR should’ve said something like “Kennedy‘s medical beliefs are more like those of 18 century doctors who bled people to get rid of diseases than they are to modern medicine.”
It’s such a good example of journalistic malpractice and the danger of presenting everything as though it was on equal footing and just a matter of opinion and so it’s super important to just impartially present both sides rather than declaring that one side is just cranks and quacks and crackpots.
*widely accepted. It says widely accept instead. That is a typo isn't it?
The final paragraph is awful. Can't we just accept that both impact health? RFK Jr is attacking vaccines and arguing for a reduction in the EPA, SNAP, and anything that would help with better nutrition and less pollution.
RFK Jr can't help with any any aspects of human health. His personal beliefs have no interest in it. He believes the strong should thrive and the weak should perish.
Don't want to be accused of taking sides! "Some say the earth is roughly spherical, but a vocal group of advocates disagrees..."
Also, to be fair, they seem to be advocating for terrain theory not miasma theory, maybe a pedantic distinction but I feel it's worth noting.
RFK Jr believes in terrain theory, but he calls it miasma theory because he doesn't know what the fuck he is talking about.
Many such cases.
He just wants to make sure all of our humours are in balance
Because it's a title, you put quotes around a title for someone in an article.
*something
because modern journalism's idea of objectivity is to treat centuries of scientific research and the ravings of a lunatic as being of equal merit
Kennedy apparently has a sense of…humours?
because NPR is in on it :/
reminds me of the people that say "ACtUalLy Gravity is only a theory"
Can’t believe there are people out there that take their physics lessons from Wile E. Coyote. 🤦🏻♀️
More likely Elphaba now, they’ll be like “she defied gravity right on stage!” (not sure if Warner bros have kept Loony Tunes in the zeitgeist enough for new audiences )
What is "reality" anyway?
He doesn't seem to actually respect miasma either.
His nonsense is closer to "terrain theory." One of these guys who takes vitamins & lifts weights & thinks that will make him tough.
If he really believed in "miasma", he'd advocate for masks and air filtration systems!
"Germ theory" is also not current understanding. Bacteria, viruses, and fungi could all be considered "germs" but differ from each other. Mercury poisoning and mesothelioma (asbestosis) are caused by airborne particles, ie "miasma." Genetic diseases like polycystic kidneys are caused by neither.
I read it as being mocking of RFK jr. Like we all know germs are real so putting it in quotes like that highlights the absurdity. It's like talking about "gravity" or "natural selection"
Quotes are not always air quotes. They can just be quotes.
That was kind of my reaction. But the framing does make it look like "stupid idea disproved 200 years ago" has similar weight to "well-established theory that has successfully transformed treatment and prevention of disease"
I suspect they are quoting an expert on medical history
Christ, why didnt they say "Miasma theory that dates back to the Rennaissance" or SOMETHING, ANYTHING to state how out of whack these cretins are?!
Sending hugs 🤗
How long before they start hunting witches for putting curses on people and giving them illnesses?
Npr believes they have a higher responsibility to be neutral than truthful
My degree in Bacteriology and I are screaming at the wall right now.
Yeah, my degrees in Microbiology and Infectious disease are sobbing in despair.
The post contrasts "one" wth "the other". That's legitimate. But those - the many, the majority - who don't read the article will be steered towards equalising the two ideas.
Exactly!! I thought the same thing!
Or maybe he is nuts. 🌰
More on the subject: arstechnica.com/health/2025/...
Bring on the leeches and blood letting!
how could they leave out the four humors?!
Well I hope he writhes in agony from a surfeit of black bile that no amount of bleeding can cure!
📌
Balancing the humors also seems to be an underreported treatment option. ☹️
Via bloodletting by a barber
getyarn.io/yarn-clip/da...
RFK JR. thinks we were healthier when the average lifespan was 45 years.
Aren't they for quotation purpose to tell the readers that the term is not from the journalist but from someone else who is quoted in the article?
I remember reading Little House on the Prairie and Ma’s mistaken belief in “bad air” causing malaria, and clarified by Wilder (narrator) that it’s from a parasite carried by mosquitoes. The book is set in the 1870s. Published in the 1930s with the correct cause. His science is over 100 years old.
I'm generous but I feel like the theory is so well accepted that most people don't know it has a name
The scare quotes should be around "Health" Secretary.
Dude has a (dead) brain worm and rotted his brain on heroin for years. I really don’t care about his opinion on things and he has zero place running anything—let alone a health agency. That man should keep his “opinions “ to himself.
"evolutionary theory"
“Outdated.” How about wrong?
This asshole has had the best healthcare his whole privileged life.
Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh What the EVERLOVING f-v-c-k!!!!!
I just have a lot of screaming that basically equals me throwing non-Christian, non-white ancient medical manuals that provide supporting evidence to Germ Theory even before its inception even if they're not 1:1.
I think RFK Jr. should be willing to have the courage of his convictions and do a demo in which he exposes himself to Ebola so he can disprove germ theory. Maybe he will gain valuable knowledge.
Yeah, but half an hour after being diagnosed, he'd be suing to be allowed to spread it everywhere.
If I were you I’d be so tired, I’d hibernate.
Wasn’t the ‘miasma theory’ before scientists really had equipment to do proper investigations? Germs and viruses aren’t a ‘theory’ are they? Dear Lord - IS the earth flat?
So many words could have been used, like "false," "untrue," "baseless," "falsified," "well known as crap for centuries now." But NPR opts for "outdated."
For a long time the right has held that scientific "theories" are not facts bc they are literally called theories... it's just anti intellectualism, a way for them to pick and choose "facts"that line up w their beliefs.
Yes, but why is *NPR* doing it now?
🤷🏾♀️ trying to appease the ppl trying to defund them
Because germ theory is a liberal conspiracy, allegedly
might want to get your humours checked if this tiredness lasts
There is the possibility they are just dumb and know no other way to highlight the terms (title case would have been more neutral maybe? Cos they prob can’t italicise in headlines either)
Will we see a revival of humorism theory as well?
YES! Release the bile!
Probably because the gem theory is an unofficial term for the theory It indicates the naming without giving it the proper noun treatment
It’s important to both sides “facts” apparently.
What’s next, leeches?
Tired? Probably just some malign humors, nothing a little bloodletting wouldn't clear up, or perhaps a tincture of laudanum
"You shouldn't make jokes referencing a thing you know very little about to experts on said thing," they tell me. Cowards, all of them
I’ll take some laudanum, if you’re offering ✋
- America
I was told there’d be soma…? This (gestures wildly) is hell on the nerves.
It's all partisanship. Miasma had a renaissance when some scientists wanted to get WHO to admit Covid was airborne. Personally I think media should put all scientific theories in quotes so people quit thinking any theory is final and beyond challenge www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2021...
There was me thinking he was more into “worm theory”
NPR is being really sketchy lately. They published an article about the mainstream rise of Christian music the same day Michael Tait was outed as a sexual predator. Maybe just bad timing, but that's some expertly bad timing.
@briahnajoygray.bsky.social Please do an episode to shred this nonsense
His plan for UHC is just sending everyone a jar of Vaporub
Because the writer adheres to humoral theory? Probably due to an excess of choler.
They're not air quotes, they're literally written in text. One of their grammatical purposes is denote that the text contained within them is the title of something.
Well some people believe in germ theory and some people believe we get sick when we anger the Golden Gnome. Who’s to know who is right?
I am so down for re-education camps for journalists at this point. Holy shit.
On what grounds is miasma theory a theory? It doesn’t pass the scientific method. Germ theory does. Neither should be in quotes, and miasma theory should instead be the miasma hypothesis at the least.
Already hear the editors argument "well sure it's not valid now but a lot of people believed in it in the past" ignoring that the past was 150+ years ago and miasma had a constantly shifting definition that even then was considered worthless by many people.
The most egregious outdated, disproven bit of pseudoscience that he believes in is eugenics but it's also the least surprising that he holds
The headline does a disservice to the story. I listened to this while driving yesterday morning, and the story clearly presented a belief in miasma theory as crank. The experts in the article say that germ theory was a giant leap forward in disease treatment and completely debunked miasma theory.
Also "widely accepted" makes it sound like there is still debate amongst scientists if Germ Theory is valid or not. When I teach the History of Medicine I always point out to students that people in the past were not stupid with wild ideas about causes and cures, they couldn't know. But today...
You are so right to ask. It's because language meanings evolve over time, and a lot of people are too lazy to focus on the proper meaning of theory, which of course in a scientific sense means an idea that has been tested "six-ways from Sunday", to the point that it's pretty much accepted as fact.
A scientific theory can be overturned, of course. But it's pretty rare (the Ptolemaic theory comes to mind), and you've got your work cut out for you. You're not gonna overturn a scientific theory with a bunch of homespun crapola.
"Black Bile Humour" has joined the chat
The year medical science was allowed to die.
Haven't seen you post in a while. Hope everyone and everything is good!
I mean, its not been. My mother passed in May. Thanks for asking though.
My condolences.
I’m so sorry.
I'm so sorry! If you mentioned it, I totally missed it. Please accept my deepest condolences. 🫂
wow i didn't notice the air quotes. ok that's a BIG blunder
"Reporting on the controversy" is the journalists' "I was just following orders."
"Journalism" getting a little rickety around here
"Miasma Theory" is a thing outside of history books?
Both sides!
😂
OH GOD WHAT "Outdated" is not the fucking word to be using to describe miasma theory.
Because NPR is a feckless tool of capitalist interests that consistently uses false neutrality to obfuscate its agenda of propping up the status quo of late stage capitalism.
"False equivalency?"
He wants to take us back to the middle ages. 🤦♀️
This is classic @npr.org both-siderism. I have been a donor and supporter most of my life but Scott Simon did this on abortion one morning and I’m not over it and haven’t donated since.
And all it explains is that he is an absolute fucking moron with a worm eaten brain.
NPR seems to think we're all characters in historical fiction. Next, leeches.
You already have leeches in American healthcare. The HMOs. (And before some bugger goes “actually” at me, yes I know leeches are used in microsurgery too to help clean up and maintain blood flow)
I didn't know this! Maybe because I get my healthcare through the VA and I would be surprised to find out they used leeches.
Here ya go: www.rcseng.ac.uk/library-and-...
🙏 thanks
What, we're not using the four humours anymore ?
I'm as tired of people who "both-sides" asn issue as everyone else. Sometimes there is only one damn side! Illness is caused by germs. We've known that for how long?? This guy is turning us into a third-world nation.
“Science is just another opinion.”
I agree with healthy living and supplementing a strong immune system however you pull on that string as a panacea and it will lead you down terrible paths.
Germs, Miasmas, it's all wrong, it's witch's curses, that's what it is!
Miasma makes total sense if you’re hopscotching over decaying bodies in the streets and lived before 1900.
Next he's going to question this theory called "gravity". Why can't he do something productive like figuring out of light is a wave or energy. 😏
He's the Joker also should be mentioned in the coverage.
Ugh and that’s NPR! Do better NPR, do better.
NPR do better
Boomers, it’s time to retire, okay???
beside the point but are they still air quotes if they are, like, just regular printed quotation marks?
Wait is this why RFKjr doesn't bathe?
And why are they calling both as „theories“, as if one of them wouldn‘t be *proven*, measured, fact…..
Technically germ theory is correct using scientific terminology, but with miasma they went with common language use (since obviously no one could scientifically prove a valid hypothesis based on miasma) which almost offends me as much as wording them in a way implying both are/were valid.
exactly - „theory“ is widely used as synonym for just *thoughts* especially since corona pandemic
Not sure you're gonna overturn a couple centuries of scientific nomenclature 'cause laymen or bad faith actors don't know/exploit the difference between colloquial and academic use cases.
Agree and I think that's one of the big reasons the people coming down on NPR were so forceful. Rightly or wrongly they are held to a higher standard than most media so the assumption is it has to be bad faith here not ignorance. (hell just use theory and Theory here and fixes a big part of it.)
And the really frustrating thing is environmental factors do play a role in disease. But not in the way MAGA wants you to notice such as the link between air pollution and childhood asthma rates. Or the link between poverty and CVDs.
And is a theory still a theory when it’s been disproved? Nope. It’s just a bad idea.
I think RFK Jr needs to balance his humours. Clearly too much (checks notes) phlegm in his blood. Or something.
yeah, I think it's the or something
'E 'as un petit... 'ow you say... je ne sais quoi missing in 'is little grey cells. Poirot 'e is not.
The whole administration is overdue for a good trepanning.
Phlegm! Ludicruous claim. It's bile, BILE!
Because NPR has completely "lost" its "way."
They can't understand why congress is defunding them.
This is total BS: everyone knows that bad humors are to blame.
gotta maintain the illusion of neutrality
The guy is not a medical doctor or a scientist. If I want to know what he thinks about anything I can ask any heroin addict. Stop treating him as if he has any knowledge
He doesn’t support generally accepted medical science. It seems to be a waste of my time to try to understand what his non-conforming theory of the world is.
But I can see that if you study medical history, it’s not a waste of your time.
Because it’s 1776, are you from the future or something
Why indeed
Some scientists believe that RFK Jr. is full of “blood and organs” while I think he is full of “utter horseshit”.
💩
I don’t know why this just popped into my head but it is interesting that he thinks bad air makes you sick but is against masking or doing anything about air quality…
This is where I immediately went
MSM and both sider news. Not all things are equal not all things are true
I will make sure to close my window tonight so that the bad air doesn't come in and get me
Do you have a stoop? Stoops put you above the miasma. Other than that, just hold your breath while passing a cemetery, and you’ll be fine!
I wanna know how that reporter can bend over backwards that far without lasting spinal damage
And where's the editor who missed the obvious typo?
My brain autocorrected that to the point where when I was adding alt text to a screenshot of it I just assumed ocr made the mistake at first
So his supporters will refuse antibiotics when they’re in septic shock? Ok. #IDSky
Yes they probably will actually. But they will demand to speak to your manager when you withhold antibiotics for viral disease. And then look in disbelief when they are told I'm as senior as you get to talk to...
NPR is lazy "journalism". It specializes in milquetoast equivocation to not offend anyone in the hopes of getting donations.
Miasma theory was basically the air was bad, so if he thinks that why isn’t he advocating clean air and mask use 😬
His air is fine. Yours is bad.
And what Kind of article is that, anyway? We don’t need to „understand“ his actions. We need to understand how we got someone like him in that Position! And there’s so many of them!! 😳😳
He should know the real and historical John Snow and his works, but I think for him John Snow only exists in Game of thrones
👏🏻
Legit can someone start telling the manosphere that RFK thinks the way to stop disease is perfume
Who’s to say what is true? If only there were a system designed to test hypotheses and make conclusions based on data collect from experiments to help us understand what is true. Perhaps someday.
Me waiting for the inevitable comparison of of mercury "injections" to modern medicine.
We gotta teach the controversy pls understand
They believe in humoralism.
Obviously to show opinion is divided: RFK Jr. believes in the "miasma theory"; everyone else believes in the "germ theory." Consequently, NPR wants to appear impartial when the issue is so contentious.😬
They should just clip that to say that he "embraces disease"
some journalist got a "degree"
I don’t even have the words. He’s literally promoting a theory that was disproved *125 YEARS AGO.*
Yeah, pretty sure the miasma myth was never an actual theory, but nobody asked me, so...
📌
This. Miasma theory isn't just *outdated*, it's disproven, incorrect, untrue, inaccurate and is basically the equivalent of believing in flat earth.
Listen here, while you're busy worrying about an "imbalance of electrolytes" such that they have "metabolic acidosis," I'm over here fixing them by "balancing their humors" by "expelling yellow bile!"
I've often thought about repackaging humoral theory into the next health craze, but run into the problem that it's the standard "eat vegetables, limit your meat consumption, don't eat more calories than you use, get regular physical activity" that everyone is already ignoring.
You are right, though. If you can woo-up the packaging enough, you could probably sell a bunch of folks on these basic methods and they'll think it's magic.
The only problems are that humoral theory was popular into the Middle Ages, which makes it the wrong "wisdom of the ancient", and it isn't incompatible with the germ theory of disease. To the point that people who accepted it were a crappy microscope away from figuring it out in the 12th century.
Sounds like you may have a case of bad air!
Too much Black Bile.
Are you making a joke? I'm sorry, but in my current state of mind, I can't parse irony.
Indeed, for everything, everywhere, all at once.
Yes. Apologies. The miasma thing is so dumb I thought it would make for a goofy retort.
It's all good, I've just been arguing with my paternal family, and on edge, at seeing my maiden name.
"widely accept"
Idk the answer to your question as I don’t know why we are continuing to try to make sense of the senseless
