"Germ theory" is also not current understanding. Bacteria, viruses, and fungi could all be considered "germs" but differ from each other. Mercury poisoning and mesothelioma (asbestosis) are caused by airborne particles, ie "miasma." Genetic diseases like polycystic kidneys are caused by neither.

I remember reading Little House on the Prairie and Ma’s mistaken belief in “bad air” causing malaria, and clarified by Wilder (narrator) that it’s from a parasite carried by mosquitoes. The book is set in the 1870s. Published in the 1930s with the correct cause. His science is over 100 years old.

Technically germ theory is correct using scientific terminology, but with miasma they went with common language use (since obviously no one could scientifically prove a valid hypothesis based on miasma) which almost offends me as much as wording them in a way implying both are/were valid.

The only problems are that humoral theory was popular into the Middle Ages, which makes it the wrong "wisdom of the ancient", and it isn't incompatible with the germ theory of disease. To the point that people who accepted it were a crappy microscope away from figuring it out in the 12th century.
