Our politicians are clearly incompetent to deal with pandemics, AI scammers, climate change, etm
A new government IT system? What could possibly go wrong?
Ugh please no
😫 Why is the Labour party squandering any semblance of support for working people, and any lingering good will from the public at large, on this obviously awful plan??
Figure they’re desperate to get the growth engine running, and believe if they can do that they’ll be able to fix the rest. This is a medium-to-long term government. That, at least, I like. (This decision, not so much 😱)
more hubris
It's like the last time the government got a bee in its bonnet about technology. Graphene, hailed as "the new wonder material" 8+ years ago. Lots of interesting research to keep scientists happy, but useful products produced: 0.
Feeding frenzy for consultancies. Massive transfer of taxpayers' wealth & *data* to foreign oligarchs. Loss of jobs from admin to creative sector. AI snake oil merchants already burned through 100s of billions to produce a tool that tells you to put glue on your pizza. Absolute catastrophe for UK.🤬
The biggest fuck up is expecting this shit to be popular, rather than a source of lasting resentment.
At least now we know what this Labour’s version of PFI will be now.
And not one pothole filled.
I have a feeling that the timing of this announcement is more about filling potholes in Starmer's government.
Ah, but according to the government AI will let us know where the potholes are. Alternatively, they could just ask every cyclist and driver in the land who meet them every day.
What chances the carbon footprint of this is costed? Given the worrying info coming out about energy use of gen AI
No clue. Something something modular nukes?
The thing is, AI is the new blockchain. Blockchain was a solution in search of a problem. VCs flogged it endlessly, breathlessly, as omnitool and panacea. (It was neither.) Eventually the VCs made their pound of flesh and moved on. AI is VC's new snake oil and govs are the new starry-eyed rubes.
I saw this headline and now I’m automatically - autonomically - writing a Gnomon sequel in my head. It’s called “Zagreus” and basically it’s the same overarching sequence but everyone makes the worst decisions possible.
Except Zagreus, Gnomon’s evil twin, who just watches everything go up in flames and leaves.

A probability of 1.0 isn’t really “chance”.
Experimenting on kids again! Just like the enthusiastic embracing of iPads in primary school - ‘no need for books! No need for handwriting!’ and that turned out badly.
who is advising these people, this is something you come up with after sniffing glue
bahahahaha let labour try it these concepts and statements are absurd on their face, i do not even know where to start (thanks for sharing this article btw) AI is not some mountain to climb first, they seem to not even know what it is; and small, modular nuclear reactors? for real?
