I realize you're joking, but to be real - most online scams are coming from abroad, sometimes from people in desperate poverty, often from people who are trafficked and working as slaves and victims themselves.

Entirely correct. And even folks engaging in "traditional," stereotypical, USA-style breaking and entering, for example, aren't doing it for a good time, but out of desperation or coercion.
