The press used to be known as the Fourth Estate. Their job was to be a watchdog on government of all levels to make sure government wasn't abusing its power. Those days are long gone so sorry to say.

I mean, that became a pretty tall order when media became more profit driven under Capitalism. The Cold War didn't help in terms to maintain impartiality for journalism. And narratives became fronts in the war over people's beliefs. Fascism benefits the Rich, and the Rich own the news networks.
