Cannabis does NOT stop HIV from spreading. The statement is wildly irresponsible and wrong. People who use THC products are still totally infectious unless they're on retroviral therapies and proven undetectable. Cannabis can only slightly influence detectable levels, which is no prophylactic.

While I am not going to argue alcohol abuse can kill, please know that long term cannabis use can cause CHS (Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome). Repeated and severe vomiting (scromiting) so called because the person screams in pain as they vomit. Not fun. So not a panacea.

It's concerning that a doctor would write such a skewed summary of that article. This is simply dishonest and bad-faith, or possibly a failure in reading comprehension.

aug 19, 2025, 4:43 pm • 1 0 • view

nervouschimp @nervouschimp.bsky.social

The article clearly states that many health benefits for chronic pain, muscle spasticity, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, and refractory epilepsy are backed by evidence, but "the evidence is inconclusive on their value in treating mental disorders."

Meanwhile, most of the 'harms' are based on even weaker associations, and show up at strongly intoxicating THC levels (undefined "high THC doses"), not modest use. The abstract acknowledges "there is debate about the extent to which cannabis use is a cause of these adverse outcomes."

I know how to read and interpret a review on the effects of a drug. When a review states that a drug "may produce small to modest benefits" and at the same time can have serious adverse effects to some extent I generally don't use it. Then you are a sentient adult and you do what you want.

aug 19, 2025, 8:41 pm • 1 0 • view
avatar
nervouschimp @nervouschimp.bsky.social

You conflated "small to modest benefits" with "no strong evidence." Pretty shocking from a doctor, and suggests a bias. And the adverse effects listed were specifically related high THC doses, or even overdose. What happens when I overdose on pharma meds you prescribe me? Serious adverse effects.

This is nonsense. The positive effects on IOP simply cease when the patient stops taking cannabis... and to some extent lessens over time as the patient gains tolerance without increasing dosage. IOP just returns to the patient’s baseline. There is no negative-rebound.

the fact that it "simply returns to baseline" is exactly what I'm talking about. The temporary nature is exactly why all these organizations don't recommend it. "stops taking cannabis" means they have to use it every 3-4 hours, all day, every day www.aao.org/eye-health/t...

The official stance of the AGS: “Although marijuana can lower the IOP, its side effects and short duration of action, coupled with a lack of evidence that its use alters the course of glaucoma, preclude recommending this drug in any form for the treatment of glaucoma at the present time.”

Cannabis is not a recommended or practical treatment for glaucoma. But it isn't forbidden for glaucoma patients either. Cannabis might reduce blood supply to the optic nerve, but we don't know for sure. It's just speculation. The feds should reschedule it to make it easier to study.
