My experience with hand pies is that the dough : filling ratio favor dough, necessary for the function but not to my taste. I'm willing to consider additional evidence.

I have similar affinities. I will never forget the incredible empanadas from my time at CTIO. And Cornish pasties are a family requirement. (My mother in law is about to be.. sworn in? robed? as a bard of Cornish culture.)
