I don't really think it was MDs. The physics students get the skills needed to be quants. And we need physicists as much as we need doctors.

Physicists work just as hard. And the quantity in finance work very hard as well. The question is what incentives the society offers that draw extremely motivated and intelligent people to the different occupations. And the incentives for quantity in finance are substantial.
