Time for a master thread on all the reasons we are headed for a (likely very bad and prolonged) recession. First, tariffs. So much stove-touching you can’t believe it. www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/lut...

Trump Tariffs are reshaping global trade as US allies are looking to disentangle themselves from the shitshow US GOP have been last few decades. US has become the no-go zone for trade. China is leveraging this to make huge inroads into other markets. 🇪🇺🇧🇷🌍 to name a few.

Europe is enjoying the basement bargains from China on everything from dolls to electric cars. That and increased defense spending is creating a booming economy there. I’m not saying Trump = Krasnov, but hard to imagine a Russian agent doing more harm to US than Trump is!

Nutlik thinks a recession will be good for our country. He's welcoming economic conditions that will make life miserable for families all over this country. And other parts of this gov't are assuring that disease and poor health will be the norm.

Has anyone dug into Nutlicks religious leanings? He really sounds like another far off the road right wing end times Nutjob.

Nope, my bad guess. Jewish. But he's there to get bombs for Israel. And willing to work with a gentile to get them.

Listening to Lutnick for economic advice is like going to a quick lube shop for a heart transplant. I know that isn't your intent 29 U.S.C.

I think tariffs are going to the single biggest driver of economic downtown—not just because of their enormous scope, but also their indiscriminate and ever-changing nature and Trump destroying ties with our closest neighbors

# 2: mass deportation. Businesses have long relied on immigrants, everyone knows this. Businesses will shut down and/or decline to expand. Not to mention the collateral strain of 1,000s (millions?) paying for attorneys to help family members. Going after green card holders makes it that much worse

#3: travel bans & arbitrary detention. Trump is planning to ban *all* travel from 43(!) countries. And we already see officials in Canada, France, & UK warning residents against travel to US. This is going to destroy tourism and the airline/hotel industry

#4: pandemics/natural disasters. We already know what Covid did to the economy, and measles outbreak is growing. Then theres bird flu. And the people in charge (RFK) are only making it worse. Same issue, re: natural disasters. FEMA cuts and incompetent personnel will lead to disastrous responses

The natural-disaster piece is critical, because climate change is accelerating, and it’s a matter of when—not if—Trump presides over a major disaster

#5: mass layoffs of federal employees. The fed govt is by far the largest employer in the US. It’s hard to know how many have already been fired, but’s somewhere between 100-500k. And growing every day. The ripple effects will be massive

Even fed employees who have not been laid off yet are putting off big purchases (such as buying a house or car or even weddings) bc theyre worried they might lose their job. Collectively, the reduction in spending will be huge

#6: authoritarianism and lack of rule of law. Foreign businesses will decline to expand (or reduce/eliminate existing offices) in the US. Why do business in the US if court orders dont mean anything? Or if your workers are not safe? Of if a competitor can simply pay a bribe to steal your contracts?

#7: student loans. Student loan payments were paused during Covid, and Biden did what he could tinkering around the edges. But there continues to be a *ton* of people saddled with crushing student debt, and that bubble is gonna pop soon

The EU has not yet issued such an order, but it should be on its way to requiring all EU citizens to be careful about traveling to the US.
